USCG Paddlecraft Safety “Media Day”

COAST GUARD TO HOST PADDLECRAFT SAFETY “MEDIA DAY”
SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine — In an effort to increase recreational boating safety awareness in northern New England and reduce the recent spike in paddlecraft related deaths, Coast Guard Sector Northern New England will host a “Paddlecraft Safety Media Day” specifically tailored for local media outlets.
The Coast Guard has confirmed that State Boating Law Administrators and other stakeholders will be present. Elected officials have also been invited. Unique components of the planned event include a press conference, a National Weather Service update regarding a new cold water threat advisory tool, and a paddlecraft survivor interview panel. An on-water safety demonstration is also scheduled.
“In 2016 alone, 60% of all recreational boating fatalities in the First Coast Guard District occurred on a paddlecraft. Furthermore, 40% of all fatalities happened in the Sector Northern New England area of responsibility (Maine, New Hampshire, and the Lake Champlain region),” said Capt. Michael Baroody, Commander of Coast Guard Sector Northern New England. “We need to do everything in our power to decrease the number of preventable paddlecraft related deaths on our waterways”.
