Information on Criminal History Record Check for Registered Maine Sea Kayak Guides

Effective November 1, 2017, guides are required to complete a criminal history record check before a new or renewal guide license will be processed. The state contracts with a company named IdentoGO, which is the primary live scan fingerprint provider for the State of Maine and a certified FBI channeling agent. New and renewing guides should visit the IndentoGO website to schedule an appointment. The state will not accept a background check completed more than six months prior to the date that your guide's license expires. Note that appointment times at IndetoGO offices often fill up, so allow enough time to schedule yours.

After you have completed the criminal history record check, a letter will be mailed to you from the Maine Warden Service. You should receive this letter within six to eight weeks. If you do not pass the background check, you will receive a letter denying your privilege to hold a guide license with instructions on how you may appeal the decision. If you pass, you will receive a confirmation letter that must accompany your guide application along with the $135.00 fee. Applications received without the background letter will be returned.
